The Copper Coin may look like any other specialty jewelry and home décor shop from the outside, but it couldn’t be any more different. Owner, Susan Abar and her husband have a purpose for each piece of jewelry and décor to be decorated with a single penny and they share their story with everyone who enters the store.
Located at 109 N. Commercial St. in Historic Downtown Branson, The Copper Coin features a large selection of décor including some locally handmade items crafted by Branson residents. Each piece of décor and jewelry in the shop is embellished with a single penny, adding a unique flair that has an underlying meaning for Susan.
A few years ago, after being laid off from her job and enduring a bilateral mastectomy, doctors told Susan they had discovered a mass on her pancreas. With a mother and grandfather who had both died of the disease years earlier, she also prepared herself to die.
Over the next few weeks she tried to continue living life as though everything was normal and during that time, she found two pennies that she stuck in her shoe, as the old wives tale says to do for luck. Little did she know, the message “In God We Trust” engraved on those pennies would have much more significance in her life than just luck.
A short time later, she decided to get a third medical opinion and doctors told her their tests could not detect any mass. It had completely vanished and Susan was going to live.
Today, alive and in good health, Susan uses her Branson specialty shop to share her miracle story with the reminder of a single penny.

The Copper Coin is open Monday-Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and it’s right across the street from the Walgreens on the corner of Commercial and Main St. in downtown Branson.
